PRSSA recently welcomed Plant Communications Manager for General Motors, Donna McLallen as a guest speaker. With 14 years of experience at GM in Arlington, McLallen shared several important tips that she felt were necessary to remember in our PR journey. As a Communications Manager, McLallen is in charge of internal, external and community relations, and primarily works in the field.
When asked about communication strategies, she stressed that there is a much larger impact when either an employee who works on the line or a satisfied customer speaks out about a particular topic.
“Let somebody else tell the story,” said McLallen.
According to McLallen, showing that you impact the “bottom line” is extremely crucial for your personal success, and by picking an area and attacking it, you will never go wrong. In McLallen’s case, focusing on safety and quality are go-to topics because they are both valuable areas to GM and its customers.
McLallen also encouraged students to “do it yourself.” Never wait for somebody else to do what you have already thought of; taking the initiative to accomplish something is the key to getting ahead.
