On a sunny March evening members of PRSSA’s Events Committee and Executive Board were busy at work with last-minute preparations for the second professional social event of the year. A last minute venue change allowed committee member to put their skills learned at the recent UT PRSSA Crisis Communication workshop to good use. With the aide of the amazing staff at Whole Foods and the leadership of Events Director, Regina Flanigan, the event was a success.
Longhorn Networking, an event started in Fall 2011 as a way for members of UT PRSSA to network with local industry professionals, was held March 27, 2012, at Whole Foods World Headquarters in downtown Austin.
Associates from PulsePoint Group, Noble Strategic Partners, Elizabeth Christian & Associates, Ketner Group and several other prestigious Austin public relations firms and offices mingled with students in a casual setting.
Longhorn Networking was the first event to employ the use of the newly formed Events Committee, which allowed for greater member involvement and a chance for members to put their personal mark on PRSSA events.
Hugo Rojo, a member of Events Committee and designer of the printed materials for the event, appreciated the opportunity to pitch in.
“I liked how students were able to have hands-on experience in the planning and executing of the event,” Rojo said. “It’s important that we get this kind of experience where we fully represent our organization’s brand.”
Laura Raun, founder and president of Laura Raun Public Relations, praised the dedication of the UT PRSSA members.
“I went to the last [Longhorn Networking] event and came back again for this one because it’s such a good use of my time. It’s invaluable,” Raun said. “I come here to meet the members that I know are wanting to network and look for internships because those are the kind of people I want on my team.”
The success of Longhorn Networking and the implementation of Events Committee are sure signs of future accomplishments for the Alan Scott Chapter of PRSSA.
